In line with our mission to make sailing more accessible to all kids in the Bay Area, TISC in partnership with Olymipic Circle Sailing Club(OCSC) are teaming up to teach teens how to sail and learn through competition. Envision Academy of Arts and Technology(EAST), a tuition-free charter high school in Oakland has added sailing to their list of sports teams. This team is wholly funded by TISC, OCSC and community support.
Envision students have the opportunity to enroll in summer sailing camps at TISC to prepare for the Varsity Sailing Team this fall. EAST will have weekly practices at TISC throughout the academic school year with the goal of competing in interscholastic high school regattas in the near future.
Eager to learn, EAST students took a two week boot camp at TISC this summer to see if a potential sailing team was something they wanted to initiate at their school. It was definitely a challenge since none of the Envision students had much exposure to the water. Within a few days of sailing on Bug’s and RS Ventures, the EAST students started to get the hang of it. After a week most students were comfortable with the tiller and could steer a boat. By the end of the second week, all of the students were comfortable steering on a Reach course and were able to perform capsize recovery’s on FJ’s. Everyone who participated in the 2 week boot camp challenged themselves and stepped out of their comfort zone while trying something new.
When EAST students came back to TISC in the Fall (after a few weeks break from Boot Camp) they were excited to get back on the water and push to new limits. During the fall season, EAST students were able to sail comfortably around marks and understand the Rules of The Road and sailing tactics! Watching the team transform into a solid working unit, we have no doubt that EAST students are on their way to becoming a successful sailing team. Instructors commented on what a pleasure it was working with students who showed such dedication and team work.
TISC will continue to work with EAST throughout the winter season and hopes that next year a sailing team is born!
